NBA Preview (San Antonio-Boston)

San Antonio (23-12) at Boston (16-18) 7:30 pm EST

The Boston Celtics will try to end their four-game losing streak
when they host the San Antonio Spurs, who begin a five-game
road swing tonight.

A loss tonight would match the Celtics' longest skid of the season.
Boston's losses during the skid came against teams (the SuperSonics,
at Seattle, at Orlando and at Washington) with a combined 92-54
record. Three of the losses have been by double figures.

Antoine Walker, who has led the Celtics in scoring in six of its
last eight games, had 21 points and 12 rebounds before being
ejected in Boston's 90-82 loss to Orlando on Saturday.

The Celtics have lost eight of their last nine meetings with the Spurs.
Rookie Tim Duncan had 28 points and 16 rebounds and David
Robinson added 24 and seven to lead the Spurs to a 109-67 romp
over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday.

San Antonio, a game behind first-place Utah in the Midwest
Division, has won six of its last seven games. After starting the
season at 10-10, the Spurs posted wins in 13 of 15 games.

The Spurs travel to Washington, Charlotte, Milwaukee and
New Jersey before heading home.

San Antonio Spurs (23-12) at Boston Celtics (16-18), 7 p.m.

The Spurs won this season's other meeting, 101-86, the day
after Christmas in Texas. David Robinson scored 34 points
and pulled down 13 rebounds and rookie Tim Duncan added
23 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots. The Spurs
have won two straight and eight of the last nine meetings in this
series.

San Antonio has won six of its last seven games. The Spurs
had a three-game road win streak halted with a 21-point
defeat in Phoenix last Friday night. The Spurs are 8-3 against
the Eastern Conference, including 5-1 versus the Atlantic Division.

The Celtics have lost four in a row and can match a season-high
for consecutive defeats tonight. Boston has twice lost five straight
this season. Boston had a six-game home win streak halted Friday
night with a 111-92 loss to Seattle.

Free throw disparity

MON. JAN. 12

Referees are taking issue with the Celtics'
aggressive style of play. That is evident with the
following numbers. Over the last two games, the
Celtics have attempted a total of 12 free throws,
while Boston's opponents have taken 85 shots
from the foul line. That difference of 73 is
something Rick Pitino has come to grips with.

"Basically what this is what it is: We don't have a
lot of offensive firepower, physically," Pitino told
the Boston Globe. "You see all the
high-percentage shooters in the game of
basketball throughout the years. Go back to Paul Silas
and other people who can get around the rim. We
don't have a lot of people physically who can get around the
rim. That's what happens when you build a franchise, build
a program. You have to start somewhere. We don't have
a lot of low-post players right now."
