The percentages and FT discrepancy are somewhat related: Seattle shot
layup after layup, Boston settled for lots of jumpers. However, the
refs clearly called this game as if they expected Seattle to win--the
Sonics are the league's best, and the Celtics are mediocre, so Payton
can reach in all night long, but McCarty can't make a clean block,
right? Deference to superstars is a chronic NBA problem (see: Michael
Jordan), and, as I've stated in recent posts, relates to the Celts' need
to gain more respect throughout the league. For the record, I'm NOT
saying the FTs made a difference in last night's outcome, but even Mike
Gorman noted, "It's not the 45 that bothers me, it's the 5."
