I can't get too upset or excited about the All-Star "voting". A player
always starts to make the All-Star team a year or two after they first
deserve it, because it takes that long for the typical fan to become familiar
with them. On the flip side, he usually makes the team for a year or two
after he ceases to deserve it, just on the basis of reputation.

The typical fan votes for (a) his home-town players and (b) the familiar
names. He rarely takes the time to research the really good players,
especially those playing on bad teams. How many times has Walker appeared on
national TV? Most fans don't even know he exists.
