Some Celtics News from the Boston Globe

Bird early on Pitino agenda

By Peter May, Globe Staff, 06/18/97

Rick Pitino and Larry Bird may go up against each other in 23 days
during a four-team, rookie-free agent scrimmage outside Atlanta. The
Celtics, Pacers, Hawks, and Cavaliers will field teams for the three-day
event July 10-12 at Life College in Marietta, Ga.

The rookie camp games consist of 10-minute quarters. There is a
doubleheader each night, with games starting at 5:45 and 7:30.

In some cases, the assistants do the coaching and the head coaches
watch. But if the main men choose to coach, Pitino will make his
informal Boston debut July 10 against Cleveland and then coach against
Bird's Pacers on the 11th. The Celtics play the Hawks in their final
game July 12.

Dennis Johnson, the lone member of last year's Boston coaching staff
still without a job, is set to meet with Chuck Daly and the Magic this
week. DJ owns a home in Orlando. Brendan Suhr, a longtime Daly
confidant, already has been hired as the No. 1 assistant. There has been
a behind-the-scenes effort to get Daly to hire Johnson.
