How we stand

I applaud the signing of Knight for what is not a lot of money for a big man
in today's NBA. Long range he'll probably be a back-up at the 4 & 5 but a
valuable one. For right now we needed someone who could step in and play at
least half a game at center every game. While we can't predict injuries,
Travis is young and should be far less susceptible to injury than old goats
like Lister and Brickowski or Mr.Injury Ellison.

For now we can hope for Knight (28), Ellison (15), and maybe Joseph (5) to
fill the 5 spot. (Not any worse than the Bulls' 5 spot this coming season).

We have talented young players at each of the other positions although we
don't have a 3 with a good outside shot so don't be surprised to see Mercer
play significant time there (which would open the door for an undrafted free
agent 2 guard).

There are no great free agent centers on the horizon (until Duncan is free)
and Knight has a 3 yr out which would free his salary at that very time
should he choose to use it. The answer is not McDyess, Smith, or Baker! They
are all 4's. I'd love to have them in our forward rotation but our best
player (with NBA experience) currently plays that position and can't shoot
from outside well enough to play the 3.

I loved Wesley and am sorry to see him go but I rather see the same numbers
getting ($22/7) used for a position which was vacant rather than for one
occupied by Billups.

Center - Knight, Ellison, and....Joseph?

PF - Walker, Radja (hopefully not much longer)

SF - Williams, Fox (?), Mercer

PG - Billups, Brown

SG - Mercer, Barros, Minor

The line-up has it's question marks but looks to be a lot more exciting and
productive than last season's. Plus it's still a work in progress. Hopefully
Dino goes to Greece and one of our Munchkins can be dealt for a back-up 4.
Then we can add an undrafted free agent 2 guard.

The biggest improvement? Pitino for M.L. !!!
