some thoughts

People are getting way too optimistic about the Dallas pick. I
imagine it will end up being 7th or 8th overall and possibly useless
(except for the fact that it increases our chances of winning the
lottery). There's no way this will happen but imagine if that pick did
win and we ended up with 1 and 3 and get Duncan and Mercer!!! It can't
happen, but if it did imagine how many young kiddies would jump on the C's
bandwagon!!!
I brought it up several months ago and I'll bring it up again.
Sam Cassell will be a free agent this year. He's got all the skills and
height (6'3") and championship experience to be an impact point guard.
And he's younger than David Wesley. Even if we get Duncan, we'll still
need a banger type to compliment him. So we should take a look at Stanley
Roberts and Brian Williams. Before giving out any long term contracts
(even to David Wesley- our MVP this year) we need to realize that
Stoudamire is a free agent in '98 and Marbury will be one in '99. Of
course it might not be right to try to pry him away from McHale but it's
survival of the fittest out there.
But since the free agency market won't be that big this year
there was no sense of urgency to dump Dino, Dee, and Dana. And since they
all were injured and have long term contracts (the worst of both worlds
when you're trying to deal someone), they were impossible to get rid of.
Hopefully they will be able to produce next year and we'll be able to move
at least one of them in a cap-friendly deal.
We really need to be careful about over-rating our own players.
Resigning Rick Fox to anything more than a two year deal would be a big
mistake. He is playing the best ball of his career right now, but as
Williams and Walker develop, there will be a logjam of monumental
proportions at the 3 spot. I definitally would prefer that we renounce
him and make a move for Cassell.
