the Mall analogy

Keets wrote: >>Now, about what he actually paid for:
As I understand the description of the site, it was a
gateway. In other words, it was set up like a shopping
mall. There was an entry fee to get in the door, and
then lots of little shops set up inside with porn for
sale. Pete said that he used his credit card to get
in, but only looked at the sites/shops from the
outside and didn't pay to download anything. So, Pete
has paid the owner of the mall, but has not paid any
of the pornographers. This is a quibble, but it's
questionable whether you can connect this payment
directly with encouraging demand for child porn. This
kind of arrangement is fairly common on the Internet,
and Yahoo has a ton of shops.<<

The "keepers" of the Landslide Productions "Mall"
Thomas and Janice Reedy, who "merely" provided credit
card verification services and a portal to the
hundreds of Russian and Thai sites under its banner,
tried the "Mall" defense at their trial. He's now
serving 1,235 years in prison. Even without being in
physical possession of child abuse images, Reedy was
inciting to distribute. On the demand end, paying the
keepers of the Mall is also inciting the distribution
of child abuse images... and in turn inciting the
further abuse of children. Hopefully Pete's
hair-splitting rationalizations won't grow to include
this shaky analogy.
