There's no excuse for child abuse monsters

MOST Britons will be horrified by the scale and
depravity of paedophile activity in this country, says
the NSPCC chief executive and director Mary Marsh.

Today writing exclusively for The Sun she says the
truth of the evils available on the internet would
make most adults sick to their stomachs.

SEXUAL abuse of children is vile, barbaric and
inhumane and it is something which should appal us
all.

To inflict horrific abuse on helpless, defenceless
children should not be tolerated in any society.

This has been the generally-accepted view by the
majority in Britain until recently.

Since the arrest of former rock star Pete Townshend
for allegedly downloading child porn from the internet
there seems to have been a worrying shift in attitude
towards paedophiles.

Some say we should not be too hard on those who are
only looking at a few pictures and others claim
viewing these images can control a paedophiles sexual
desire and may actually be protecting children.

Both claim its a witch-hunt. Both talk nonsense.

The police are carrying out the Operation Ore
investigation of 7,000 suspected paedophiles with the
co-operation of the NSPCC.

They have uncovered pictures and videos of very young
children some just two weeks old being sexually
abused.

People looking at these images once, through curiosity
or otherwise, would be sick to the pit of their
stomachs and be unable to view them ever again.

They are images that stay with you. Anyone who decides
to continue viewing must surely be enjoying what they
see.

And if thats the case then we should all be worried
about the protection of our children.

If anyone has any doubt of the appalling nature of
these images, they should watch The Hunt for Britains
Paedophiles on BBC2 tonight.

Defenders of those 7,000 on the Operation Ore list
claim these people could have just hit on these child
porn sites by chance.

But anyone who has given their credit card number to
look at these sites knows they are breaking the law,
and they know they are paying for very hard core child
pornography, which perpetuates the abuse of children.

Would any of the people who argue Its only a few
pictures allow their children to be photographed and
put on the internet? Of course not.

Viewing internet child porn means more children being
abused because if the demand is there so too will the
supply.

And the drive for more and newer images means children
will continue to be sexually abused.

This is not a witch-hunt. Paedophiles need help,
advice and access to treatment. But first they deserve
to be identified, caught and punished.
