Old bean is a friendly way of saying "you ol' bastard" to a friend:-)

or at least, that's what I would say to my mates! I really don't know
how the phrase came about or what it's derived from, but then there is a
lot of British slang that's true of.

There is a website somewhere which has explanations of a lot of British
slang, can't remember what it's called at the moment, but if I find it
I'll let you know.
