Re: Faith in something bigger

You mean "who's" behind the door? Isn't that a Zebra song?

Scott:

Not being s Zebra fan, I can't say...but who's to say that it's a who and not a what? And George Harrison has a song called Behind That Locked Door, if that helps.

I think *you're* wrong, though.

If you didn't, there'd be no dicussion.

I believe Pete writes for himself first. Whatever follows....follows.

You may be right (not the Billy Joel song), but if so then it goes against what Pete himself has said about his writing. OK, I know...Pete contradicts himself. A good point.

If the listener decides to ex-
plore further then so be it. But you make it sound like Pete's mak-
ing little "puzzles" out of his songs to try and "guide" us to some
ultimate knowledge.

Hey, that's what Rock musicians used to do in the old days! "Here's another clue for you all/The walrus is Paul." Why not Pete? Why can't he be obscure and oblique?

You're way off base here. He was saying that once you impose a rigid
set of rules about what people can believe, how people can act, etc.,
you've blocked the very path that can lead them to a clearer under-
standing, a higher insight, if you will.

That's not how I read it. I see it as people want a quick and easy path to higher consciousness, and it's never quick nor easy.

It's the religious doctrine that confines & limits a person's growth -

I'll be the first to agree with you there. But I don't think that's what Tommy was saying.

Maybe he was saying we all have to cut our own individual path and
that we shouldn't necessarily look to others to create the path for
us.

That's what *I* personally believe. But if that's what Pete meant to convey in Tommy, I see no indication of it. Because that would make Tommy a "villian" for blocking the path of others, whereas in the story Tommy is the ONLY enlightened character. Yes, the movie is different...it shows Tommy's message undercut by his step-Dad, and that's something else entirely.
