Shhh!! I think there are some non-adults listening. Ooops!! Too late!
But then, I guess one good rant deserves another. (Haha. Stepped into that
one, didn't you?) ;)

I'm not sure "liberalism" is the word you're looking for here. There's no
real correspondence between political conservatism and restrained or even
intelligent behavior. Notice that another Bush daughter was busted the
week, and lest the UK folks think they got off scott free, Prince William
and his little toke were spread all over the US tabloids as well. Both
these families would be considered fairly conservative.
I think permissive parenting is what you're complaining about, as opposed to
a rigid traditional upbringing. There are points to either side. I used to
think that strong (rigid) control of children led to better-prepared adults,
but then I notice that my friends who followed this approach had serious
problems with rebellious teens, and a huge generation gap. Those who were
more understanding (permissive) of their children's want and needs seemed to
manage a somewhat better transition to adulthood.
On the other hand (as we've said), children who are over-protected in
private schools or have anything they want are often unready for the
dreadful atmosphere of high school, or for the real dangers and
responsibilities of life on their own. Whatever, no upbringing is ever
perfect, and everybody has to make the best of what they've got.

<snip crazed political rant>
As I said above, I don't think politics really enters into it, other than
the fact that permissive parenting is now ofen required by law, and parents
who would prefer to be more traditional are proscribed from traditional
methods (i.e. whacking their kids.) Since these parents can't implement
their preferred method, they're often at a loss as to how to deal with their
children.

Hey! I love Keanu Reeves films!

I take it you'd like to whack them?

Well, I don't agree with your whole rant. Like you said, I tend to be in
the middle and to see both sides.

Um, didn't we hear about this in Quadrophenia? Everybody's grandparents
must have said this at least once. The truth is that there are strong
societal pressures for kids to conform to the norm of their Generation.
They see it all over TV and at school, etc. and they have to fit in, or else
be traumatized by ridicule. Most parents worry about their kids, but about
the best they can do (as we've been saying) is try to prepare the kids for
the consequences of real life. Trying doesn't always help, and many times
the kids have to crash into things themselves before they learn--everybody's
life is different, after all, and times change.
><Maybe then they will all grow up and buy Who albums ;).

These are the folks who will be looking after us in the nursing home. ;)
But, by then they'll be dealing with teens of their own, and complaining
about how awful they are.
