MSG night 1

I don't think I have all my thoughts clearly put together at this point,
being 9 AM and all. ;-) But last night's show was very good. The band was
in great form.

I'll just post a few notes:

We had a fun pre-show gathering at Molly Wee- I took a bunch of pics with my
digital camera and was prepared to have them on a webpage for everyone to
view today, but I left my USB wires at home, so I'll wait until the shows
are over and then post them. But it was lots of fun to see both new and old
faces. I hope everyone coming to MSG for any of the shows, whether you're a
poster or a lurker, considers coming by and saying hello. There were a
bunch of people there who weren't posters, some of them weren't even on any
of the Who lists at all, and it was great to see them all.

As you've probably read by now on some of the other Who boards, a bottle
(plastic water bottle I think) was thrown down to the stage at the end of
WGFA. I saw it hit the stage but I didn't see it hit Roger in the arm.
Apparently it did, and Roger was fucking ANGRY about it. He was on the
verge of a tantrum. He went to the edge of the stage and threatened the
person that threw it to come down to the stage. (I have no clue if he
really knew who threw it or not, I don't imagine how he could have seen it
coming). In any case, he gave a bunch of menacing looks and went to the mic
and told the person to come down to the stage so he could "shove this bottle
up your arse." Pete went to the mic and said "come on, Rog, it's just one
guy," but Roger was not happy at all. Pete hugged him and they left the
stage. I was convinced that this was going to be one of those occasions
where the band was going to come out for the encore without Roger, like the
few shows in 1989. Pete did come back out and, noticing that the mood was
now heavier in MSG, did a little comedy routine to lighten up the place,
offering us a list of things that we could throw at the stage: watches,
cameras, wallets, girlfriends...someone through a $5 and then a $20 at Pete,
which he took and announced "this will pay for Roger's hospital bills."
Then, after a second, he looked out and said "Don't throw anything," in that
way where you know he's fucking serious.

It was very exciting. :-)

A few other thoughts - the highlights for me were Another Tricky Day (which
was done very well), and Sparks was just astounding. The whole show was
fantastic. Pino did a wonderful job and the crowd was VERY appreciative of
him. There was no on-stage mention of John in dialogue between numbers,
although Pete's lyrics in TKAA referenced him very clearly. I don't have
the lyrics at my disposal but I'm sure someone else remembers them.

Simon played (from what I could see) mostly acoustic for the show and it
wasn't up very loud, so in NO WAY did Pete ever rely on him to take the
lead. I'm a big Simon fan so I would have loved to have heard more of him,
but I understand that this is a Who show and so Simon's place was right
where it should have been. His backing vocals were wonderful. He put the
high part back into I Can't Explain, sang the high lines on Another Tricky
Day (and hearing Pete and Simon sing together is perfect), and did the high
harmonies on Amazing Journey (including the 1975-ish ones on "sickness will
surely take the mind...").

I'm sure there's more to share but I can't think of it at the moment. If
you're going to the show tonight, please come to Molly Wee beforehand.
