The following is a link to a mind-boggling article by an Iranian 
filmmaker, writing in English.  Much of his analysis is weak, but the 
piece is invaluable
for the facts presented about Afghanistan.  (For example, I didn't
know that the Taliban is most directly a creation of Pakistan.)

The article shows Afghanistan as having been bombed by the Russians 
into a landscape of loose dirt, from which they build their houses. 
Terrorism, which at least guarantees some meals, shelter, and the 
opportunity for travel to countries with everything from running 
water to discos, is apparently the best career option.
