"Eau de cologne" meaning "telephone" is probably an example of a bizarre
British thing known as Cockney rhyming slang, where you think of a word or
phrase that rhymes with what you want to say.  Kind of a "code". Some ones
I have hear:

"pork fat"= HAT
"eau de cologne"= TELEPHONE
"spin and whack it" = JACKET

some of my British friends say things like this.  I think the Aussies use
it too.
