For a long time now, Pete seems to have favored the
MXR distortion pedals and the MXR compressor. The
Schecter guitars that Pete used during the early 80's
were outfitted with humbucker pickups that would
certainly give the crunch, and I suspect that the long
sustaining tone that he got for soloing and such came
from the MXRs + the humbuckers.
Even during the Live-at-Leeds days, Pete used an
overdrive/distortion pedal for some things, even
though you would think that the sheer amp volume would
do it. He is definitely a "tone head". At the Detroit
gig last year he said that he doesn't like stage
tuners because they subtly alter the pure tone of the guitar!
