Fundraiser With Crow, Blige, & Daltrey Brings In Record Amount

(10/17/01, 7 a.m. ET) -- Thursday's (October 11) annual City Of Hope
Spirit Of Life dinner, featuring performances by Sheryl Crow, Mary J.
Blige, No Doubt's Gwen Stefani, the Who's Roger Daltrey, the
Temptations, and others, pulled in more than $5.1 million for the
renowned medical center and research facility.

A new record was set with the sum, which will establish an honorary
research fellowship in the name of the night's honored guest, Vivendi
Universal executive vice chairman, Edgar Bronfman Jr.

Crow explains her support for City Of Hope. "I just appreciate that
they continue to evolve and stay current," she says. "You know, they
started with a tuberculosis fight and they've now, of course, evolved
all the way to stem cell research as well as AIDS (news - web sites)
research."

The evening featured artists performing Motown songs. Others appearing
included India.Arie, Bilal, Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora, Shelby Lynne,
Melissa Etheridge, Jonny Lang, Brian McKnight, and Smokey Robinson.
