Rousing hymns, mournful blues, Joni, Van and Johann Sebastian ... all have
the power to take you to another place. Here, novelist and would-be
guitarist Tim Winton celebrates the music that has coloured his life and
shaped his prose....

...Sometimes, I think my novels owe as many musical debts as they do
literary influences. Quite a few had specific musical triggers. A line from
the Who's Quadrophenia for An Open Swimmer. Songs by Tom Waits and Van
Morrison for The Riders. My most recent novel, Dirt Music, had some of its
origins in a Chris Whitley song, Big Sky Country, about the possibility of
"kissing time goodbye"...
