White music, Titanic DVD??????

I live in the South. When I say that, I don't mean
Richmond or Atlanta. I mean the part of the country
that scares the hell out of those of you that have
never been here!
Since I was a kid, I have been going to Old Time music
conventions - open air, weekend (or week) long summer
time events that happen in places like Mount Airy,
Galax, Black Mountain. Believe me this is a beautiful
part of the USA. Anyway, the music that I hear at
these places has not been influenced by R&B, delta
blues, gospel or anything that you would associate
with "black music". This is stuff like "The Ballad of
Maddy Groves" and songs that are two, three, four
hundred years old that come from Ireland and Scotland
mostly. These are people that consider "bluegrass" a
modern innovation and prefer that you don't play it!
Some of these events, like the Galax convention,
attract many thousands of folks. If you spoke to some
of these people and told them that "white" music only
became part of the popular culture with the Titanic
soundtrack, it would be mighty offensive. On the right
night you could provoke violence with a statement like
that! Tribal indeed!
These are not people that necessarily shun black music
- if you asked alot of these players could probably
whip out Parchman Farm on the spot - but they do
recognize that there is a culture that is being kept
alive here simply because enough people are still
around that love it.
Also, saw James Brown at the War Memorial Auditorium
on July 6 and it was SUPERB.
