A Ramones/Sex Pistols chronology (almost no Who)



Since People seem to be a little confused about it, here's a timeline of the
early careers of The Ramones and The Sex Pistols:

1974 Aug 16 - The Ramones begin their residency at CBGB's in New York.

1975 May - Malcolm McLaren returns from six months in the U.S. managing The
New York Dolls.  He wants to turn a band he knows called the Swankers into a
"punk rock" band modeled after the look of New York punk Richard Hell.

1975 Aug - John Lydon joins the band as singer.  McLaren renames him "John
Rotten" and the band "The Sex Pistols."

1975 Nov. 6 - The Sex Pistols play their first gig at St. Martin's School of
Art in London.

1976 Feb - The Ramones record their first album (including "Blitzkreig Bop")
for $6,400.

1976 July 4 - The Ramones play The Roundhouse in London.

1976 Sept. - The Sex Pistols make their first national appearance playing
"Anarchy In The U.K." on the TV show "So It Goes."

1976 Oct. - The Sex Pistols are signed to EMI for a £40,000 advance.

1976 Nov. - The Ramones pull out of a British tour twin-headlining with The
Sex Pistols.  They are replaced by The Damned and The Clash.

1976 Nov. - The Sex Pistols release their first single, "Anarchy In The
U.K."

1976 Dec. - The Sex Pistols appear on ITV's "Today" show and, goaded by the
interviewer, start using four-letter words.  They instantly become the talk
of England.

1977 Jan. 12 - The Sex Pistols are kicked off EMI.

1977 late Jan. - Steve Cook and Paul Jones of The Sex Pistols run into a
drunken Pete Townshend at The Speakeasy in London.  He tells him The Who are
breaking up and they are the future.  They tell him they don't want The Who
to break up.

1977 Mar. - Sid Vicious replaces Glen Matlock as bassist despite an almost
total inability to play his instrument.  The Sex Pistols spend six days on
the A&M label before being kicked off due to pressure from other label
artists.  They earn £75,000.

1977 May - The Ramones finally tour the U.K.

1977 May 27 - The Sex Pistols' second single "God Save The Queen" is
released on Virgin and sells 150,000 copies in five days.

1977 June - The Ramones' "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker" hits #22 in the U.K.

1977 June 15 - The Sex Pistols perform "Anarchy in The U.K." on a barge
outside the Houses of Parliament.
