Re: The Who Mailing List Digest V8 #4
You can never use "facts" to state an opinion...
Rush are to The Who as Kenny G is to Louis Armstrong. Rush have no
soul. They are technically all great musicians, but they have no feel,
can you see Rush doing a free form blues jam??? or a unrehearsed jam in
and out of "Tom Sawyer"???
There was a revolving door of musicians at school who came in as Rush
devotees, playing every piece of Rush music note for note on any
instrument up through the kazoo, within 2 semesters they discovered that
there were musicians and artists who play with passion and soul; it is
not what you play, but how you play - Pete's one-note solo on "I Can
See For Miles" is power and feel as an example.
You are right, I have turned my ears off to Rush since the early 90's, I
found them boring, devoid of feel, and predictable. Maybe in the
bargain bin next to a "Psycho D" CD I will pick up a later Rush
CD and try again. My stereotype of Rush fans is not so cool, it is
a different type than Who fans
I dig your opinion, let's have a comparison free list - it is
futile.
What about this thread?... What artists do you now listen to that give
you some of the same buzz you got from The Who? Has anyone heard
Dodgy - "Free Peace Love" is a really good album, with great
homage to Who styles;
Ocean Colour Scene have quality CD's too, mods...;
I dig Blondie a lot, their last studio album was a refreshing disc and
had a jam pack of musical styles on it, great drummer - played
w/Townshend;
and any fan of interested in the art of putting a studio album together I
think would really love the Monkees boxed set which details how they put
together the unheralded "Headquarters" album. I can not
recommend these discs enough they chronicle the piecing together,
rehearsals, screw ups, studio banter, and inspiration in what goes on in
a recording studio - truly, you can get the disc from Rhino's
homepage.
So, I know this is a Who list, but... enjoy art, enjoy opinions, and my
favorite "be kind, be real, or get out of my fact"
<<OK, I'M DONE, BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS THIS....I RESPECT YOUR
OPINION,
AND EVERYONE ELSE'S, BUT MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT BEFORE
YOU
TRASH ANOTHER ARTIST>>
