They may have given him an advance payment for Tommy, but the show actually lost
money which is why it had to close after a year.  This would seem incredible
with the crowds it was drawing, but there was a mind-blowing article last month
in the NYT about how the producers of "The Iceman Cometh," a play with several
actors on a single set with no effects, had to charge $100 a ticket just to
break even thanks to unions, stars' fees, theater rentals, etc.
