Pete cares

<< It's the quality not the quantity of fans that count :-)

I agree but have to add something here. About this issue of
popularity/sales/attendance, Gigi asks, "Who cares?" Pete Townshend
cares, that's who. He's never been shy about saying that he goes for
hits, and that he cares how popular he is. The popularity of The Who has
a direct impact on how often they work, so the issue is at least somewhat
relevant to me. Wanna know the main reason he hasn't made a solo album
in six years? Because no one bought the last one. As much as I wish The
Who didn't care how many people like them and would just make music
anyway, they do care and it affects their decisions.

FWIW,

At Boston/Harbour Lights Aug. 14th Pete said "When the lights came up I
recognized about half of you!" and smiled.
At Woodstock Aug. 15th Pete made a big group hug motion to our section.
At the Aug. 16th HOB show Pete thanked us for coming, standing in line all
day and buying yet another ticket.

I do think this is a new thing for Pete to verbally appreciate people and
have fun playing. I wonder where all this would be if they were still on top
with billions of faceless "fans". I know I don't think I could afford to be
in front at every show if they were still as commercially popular. Of course
I can't really afford it right now but we all have our own priorities.

PS I do wish he would vary the set list however. ;-)
