I understand the outrage at a Who song (or any Rock song) being used as
a commercial. It demeans the song, right? The classic song which means
so much to our lives...
Yeah. You guys must keep in mind Pete Townshend wasn't sitting around in
late 1964 thinking: "I'm going to write a classic song." He was in fact
trying to come up with something which would sell to the general public,
so he could make a living playing guitar in a Rock band. And at the
time, no one had any idea there would be such a thing as a "classic Rock
song"...as Lennon said at the time: "We'll be lucky if we last three
months."
Even today, I'd wager these songs mean much more to us than to the
writers. They may have written them in minutes, recorded them in hours,
and been amazed they lasted months, let alone decades.
So instead of getting upset when I see (for instance) a huge Jolly
Rancher displayed to All Day And All Of The Night or I Can't Explain for
a Ford...or for that matter hear A Little Is Enough in Grosse Point
Blank...I remember that even the Mona Lisa has been used commercially,
and this doesn't diminish the piece as a result. The Who's songs STILL
mean what they mean to me regardless...no commercial is going to change
that...
