Whatever you say about other groups using it in live shows before that,
the question was who was the first band to put it on record.  The answer
is the Beatles.  As far as Lennon discovering it, I have no idea, but from
reading books and watching the Beatles Anthology it sounded like a legit
deal to me.  The book that I have says that "I Feel Fine" was recorded on
October 18, 1964.  You have any dates as to when the Who opened for the
Beatles?  If it was before that date, then I can see your point.  If not,
this whole arguement is pretty moot.

As far as the whole music scene in England goes, in late 1964 the Beatles
were pretty much dominating it.  So the fact that they would have been
innovators in this area is hardly surprising to me.
