Pete's Numbered Guitars

PT used to put white numbers on his Gibson Les Pauls, certainly as
far back as when "The Kids are Alright" was made (see Baba O'Riley
and WGFA). My assumption, but I have no proof, is that these numbers
are for identification purposes when playing on stage. I guess that
Pete had several of these guitars on stage, and that each had
slightly different characteristics (e.g. De-tuned, pre-amp etc.) On
a dimly lit stage, having 4" high white numbers stuck to your guitar
is by far the easiest way of identifying one similar looking guitar
from another. By the way, I'd kill my Grandmother to lay my hands on
one those lovely Les Pauls.
