The Toronto Concert, July 29th

Well, the Who were in Toronto last night. It was a perfect night for a
concert, with just a bit of a wind down on Lake Ontario. The Who were
punctual, coming on at the same time as they have their other dates so
far, 8:40. Their playing of the complete Quadrophenia was outstanding.
For me, it really became something when they played "I've Had Enough".
At that point, the band was flanked on both sides by the punk and the
godfather icons, and they alternated singing the lines of the song.
>From here, they went right into 5:15, which was the best rendition of
it I've seen and heard in a number of Who concerts. The highlight of
the song and the evening was Entwistle's solo. Absolutely incredible!
He blew away the audience with his lightning-fast fingers. I hope that
if this tour results in a video being released that it includes the
Ox's solo, because it was something that I'll remember forever.
Townshend then followed it up with insane acoustic work on Drowned.
For the encore, only Daltrey and Townshend came out for the first song,
an acoustic working of Won't Get Fooled Again. I would imagine that
some first-time Who fans there were disappointed that it wasn't a
full-blown rock rendition with all instruments, but for people like me
who have heard it that way forever, this was a really nice change. It
was also great when Townshend clearly just wandered off into his own
solo with it near the end, and Daltrey laughed and just waited for him
to finish! Other encores included Can't Explain, Substitute and Behind
Blue Eyes, and the last song had Daltrey, with guitar!, doing an
acoustic version of Who Are You, and he was joined in progress by
everybody.
An excellent show - everybody got their money's worth, even if it did
cost a blood fortune! ($75!)
