- --------------------------------------------------------
What a difference a day makes! In 1989 when the Who played the Tacoma
Dome, they played to a full house, putting on one of the best performances I
saw on that tour. This time around saw the Dome put a curtain up halfway
back in the hall due to lack of ticket sales. Unfortunately the 1989 show
is mostly remembered as the one where Pete impaled his palm on the tremolo
bar on his guitar during the closing notes of Won't Get Fooled Again. I
felt that Pete's cautiousness in Portland would be even more evident in
Tacoma, but luckily that was not the case.
The show and the band 'gelled' much more than in Portland, and hopefully in
a way that will continue as the tour goes on. Roger's voice seemed to
struggle during the middle songs of Quadrophenia, but he came back from
Pete's solo Drowned sounding as strong as he did in Portland. Pete sang
'I've got a Gibson without a case, but I can't get that INTERNET look on my
face' during 'I'm One', not in a particularily complimentary way. The
real story of the show was Pete's electric playing though, especially from
5:15 on. He stepped back several times and turned up the volume on his
pre-amp set-up. He stole back some of the spotlight from John on 5:15,
soloing both before and after John's solo. His other high points came
again during the Rock, Love Reign O'er Me, WGFA, Drowned (both on acoustic),
Naked Eye, and on the show closer
Who Are You. Pete was more liberal with the windmills tonight, and he did
several at the end of WAY before stepping back, raising his guitar over his
head and smashing it to the floor at the base of his microphone stand,
ending the show. On to Vancouver!!!
