PT hearing revisited

Amongst the interesting comments by Pete were those on the status of his
hearing. He said he is still partly deafened and urged his fans not to
forget that, and said if he played electric the way he used to it would make
his hearing much worse, but that he's "ok" now precisely because he stopped
playing guitar with the Who. This was in explanation for saying that he
would at most be playing only some acoustic guitar at Quad Hyde Park. He
also said there would likely be another guitarist or two on stage (
presumably a la Bolton 1989) because he won't play the old way again. YET,
in the same interview, he also states that he doesn't want to hold an
electric guitar on stage at Hyde Park because people would expect him to
play WGFA, PW and MB. This seems to contradict the reason he gave relating
to his hearing, although he may in effect have two reasons for not wanting
to play electric for this live Quad. Now, here's what I've never understood:
why can he tolerate the volume of a Boland on stage, and JAE of course, but
not wish to play at that volume himself? If his monitor and speaker were as
remote from him on the stage as Boland's, what's the difference, unless
possibly he can't hear certain parts (the high ends?)? Also, why can he not
simply play loud electric, only not as loud as the famously loud Who were in
their prime? Has anyone ever read an interview with, or spoken to, PT about
the hearing question which goes in- to the matter in any real detail?
Finally, how loud was the volume of PT's electric at the recent U.S. shows?
Was it much louder than his acoustic, or similar say to an amplified
acoustic?. Would the volume of that electric make Quad sound ok with a full
band playing along with him? I'd appreciate hearing the views especially of
those who have seen the Who and Pete solo at different patrs of thir
careers. Thanks....Gary M.
