Chairman Pete

Regarding the various things Pete Townshend has said, or allegedly said, on
various subjects, and which have been discussed on the list lately, I'd like
to make the general comment that Pete, like his guitar sryle of yore, is an
exaggerator - he loves to make grandiose statements and also provocative
ones. This is part of his style, and it's not surprising that some of it is
not true or is not intended to be taken seriously. Just to give you an
obvious example, in the issue of Generations magazine discussing the history
and recording of the Who's legendary concert at Leeds University, Townshend
is quoted in a contemporary newspaper account of the show as saying that the
Pye Mobile Recording "Rikered"- up incredibly when recording the band at
Leeds (or words to that effect). Well obviously this has to be one of the
most ridiculous things PT has ever said! Of course, he is a highly
intelligent man and says (and writes) a lot of things that are insightful.
Kevin Winn's recent reflections on getting older reminded me that PT once
said, in a Much Music interview, that as a person grows older he must decide
what he can take with him and what he must leave behind. Well said for a guy
in his mid-40's ( as he was the time). But PT, like a lot of bright people,
especially artists, is inconsistent and will still say things because they
sound funny or are calculated to shock....Gary M.
