Quad as Punk
>If it's the first punk album (as opposed to my Generation), or at least
retrospective punk album<
"Retrospective punk" is a contradiction in terms. The punks' whole purpose,
to paraphrase Townshend, was to "lay waste" to pop and start over. Hardly a
position from which one could be retrospective.
I have to disagree about QUAD being a punk album.
1. It is not produced like a punk album (far too "technocratic")
2. It IS retrospective, no doubt about it. The Punk Movement was not about
looking back. MY GENERATION may have been a punk album, but really, to have
a career, to become a part of the Establishment, means you're no longer punk!
QUAD is the Pete using the Who to tell a story (like TOMMY and LIFEHOUSE);
with his use of repeated musical themese and literary themes and allusion
(water as redemption), Pete is attempting to tell a story with "deep
universal significance." And I think he was very successful and it was a
part of the Who's pinnacle (TOMMY-LEEDS-WHO'S NEXT-QUAD).
