Only who

Could someone please privately e-mail me and explain how I can
get in on the tree for the PT live shows. The reviews sound like he played
great shows on both coasts!

IMHO, WAY is the last great gasp for the WHO sound. Pete's guitar playing
never seems to be as angry and vibrant as on WAY, except for possibly
snippets of FD, Rough Boys and English Boy. New Song, Music Must
Change, WAY, Had Enough, Trick of the Light, all feature great mixes of
guitar and synthesizers (something Pete does better than anyone else and
deserves much more credit for). Even without Keith, the last two albums seem
lacking in coherence. WAY always felt like an album about seeking, be it
one's personal identity or the right words in writing a new song as well
as one's personal doubt and conflicts in looking for both. WAY's
sound expressed this energy through Pete's playing and Roger's vocals
especially and John's 12-string.
IH just seemed like a random collection thrown down to meet a deadline,
as I've heard PT claim several times. The guys just don't sound as
committed to that project. It seemed like an easy album to pull off all
the way around. It may be unfair, but for me, it doesn't function with
real emotion on musical and lyrical levels. It sounds good, (as most Who
efforts sound worlds better than other bands) but I don't emotionally
connect to it like WAY.
FD is hard to comment on considering it was the first studio effort of
the "new Who." Pete was smashed during the videos I've seen of the tour
and looked plastered on the videos and picture sleeve of YBYB. I think
Cache Cache, YBYB, Another Tricky Day work well and would have loved to
have seen Dance It Away included on the box set. But FD also seemed to
me to be a companion piece to Who by Numbers. Pete seems to be
struggling with a lot of the same issues like drunkeness as well as
piecing in some subtle yet lustful songs like YBYB yet they don't seem to
hang together as well as WBN. The drumming isn't as upfront and doesn't
pull the music ahead but kind of steadys an already stable sound. Roger
seems to be really unsure of himself and doesn't sound as if he knows how
he should intrepet Pete's words especially on DYSMM and HCYDIA, two
miserable jumbles that I don't think should ever have been released. Plus,
Pete did take away a lot of great numbers from the "Who" and devote them
to EG.
I don't think they should be called trash, IH and FD just don't hang
together as a single fusion of intense emotion and power as I feel
earlier Who projects and EG do.
It's great to have such a place as this list to discuss the world's
greatest rock-n-roll band. Thanks again to the maintainers of this list
for keeping things on-line.

Join together with the band
