I seem to recall reading an interview in which Jerry spoke about Pete in
glowing terms, calling him "one of the few true architects of rock" or
something like that. Still, I agree that Baba is a bizarre song for the Dead
to cover.

Speaking of Pete's famous fans, in 1980 or '81, after a phenomenal Clash show
in Philadelphia, I made my way backstage and asked Mick Jones, among other
things, what he thought of Pete. Pete was a Clash fanatic at the time (which
was probably what piqued my interest in The Clash in the first place), and I
couldn't help noticing the similarities in their on-stage mannerisms. At the
mere mention of Pete's name, Mick Jones' face lit up and he began shouting
through his toothy grin, "Pete Townshend is fucking great! He's fucking
God!!"

Does anyone know of any other famous Pete/Who fans?

My buddy has a Dead boot from '93 or thereabouts in which Jerry and the
boyz cover Baba. That's about the last thing I would have expected to
hear. I'm not sure but I think Vince, their last keyboard player, sang
lead.
