Re: This and that

Gary, re:

someone describe what it`s like? WF? Does it bear the same relationship to
the LAL version that the studio Heaven and Hell does to the live versions
released, i.e., is relatively tame?

The studio version of "Young Man Blues" (only released officially on "The
House That Track Built") is great! I think the recording of it is actually
ahead of it's time for The Who, as it sounds pretty different than most of
their other studio recordings from that time period (oddly enough, they may
have recorded it in the same studio/session as "Dogs Part 2" as it seems
closest to that odd piece "sound wise"). One interesting difference, is that
unlike the guitar breaks of all the live versions (in the beginning of the
song), on this version, the guitar does NOT stop. Unfortunately, the studio
version of "Heaven And Hell" suffers from a very poor, mono mix, which
doesn't allow itself to ever really make it. On the other hand, the studio
version of "Summertime Blues" probably falls somewhere inbetween that. A good
"rocker", but as of this recording, Roger didn't really have his vocals as
developed as he did by the time "Leeds" was recorded...

What do the omitted parts sound like, are they eg. repetitive riffing, or
something which really should have been released?

Good question. I have 2 problems with the "Who's Next" version. 1) cutting
the length almost in half, 2) mixing down the drums. I think this, unedited
Who song, is one of the best studio recordings of The Who. While the
"unreleased" parts are fairly similar to the rest, the song in it's entirety
never gets "boring". A real shame it was cut.

In the same vain, most people think that the "new" "Pure & Easy" was edited
from the version which appears on "Lifehouse To Leeds", (it's missing Roger
singing 'Pure and Easy' during the fade out) but this version is actually
another take that was included with tapes, but not released on the boot...
