Sure, it makes sense. Only the guitars were plugged directly into the
peramps -> speakers (back in the days when they actually had to plug `em in)
and then out into the crowd...the signal from the preamp to the mixing board
actually takes the longer route.
However, it is still a purer signal (and not subject to any outside
influence) than a miked speaker. Especially a speaker that may be subject to
a puncture or two during the performance!
