RE: 90% male--why?

Let's go back 30 plus years, in the history of the Who according to
Dave Marsh (Before I Get Old).
The reference period is the mid sixties, in England.

The Who were known primarily as a blokes band, which figures, because
Mod was largely a male movement. Promoter Richard Barnes thinks this
was probably because of the amphetamines that cut into their users
sex drive. The Who had more girls than most Mods, but not nearly so
many as a typical pop group. The Who were basically too aggressive to
attract many girls. Anyway, they lacked a stereotypically pretty face.
Even Roger was no teenyboppers heartthrob.
