My 9-year-old cousin demanded my walkman, one day, as I was
listening to the '89 tour. She put it on, listens a minute, and then starts
to laugh.
"Giant whistle?" she asked.
I took me a good 30 seconds to understand. Roger's enunciation has
never been superb, and "John Entwistle" became "giant whistle" to her ears.
I explained. She adores "Boris" (didn't like much else, though), and still
insists on introducing the song to her friends as written by Giant Whistle.
Anyway, I don't think too many kids would comprehend "I've Been
Away" (took me two listens myself to realize what the "cold and boney"
implied). "Whiskey Man" would certainly be appreciated; straight-jackets
and padded rooms are self-explanitory. Not everything John wrote is for
kids. ("Trick of the Light", for example.)
