Certainly I'm finding that from time to time I've been misunderstood. ("Just
wanna be misunderstood...") Many people assume that every note (or
situation) is a "fresh slate," with nothing having happened previously that
might have caused it. Or that they "know" a person well enough to figure it
out. For instance, when I wrote "The gerbils are looking particularly lovely
this year," anyone who was here during the Rich T. thing knew immediately
what I was talking about (and hopefully had a laugh about it). Neophytes
might have wondered what the Hell I meant (but I hope that they still found
it amusing).
I personally go on the assumption that there is a reason for everything, and
if someone gets offensive or attacks someone or acts in a manner I might
find unsavory, I always give them the benefit of the doubt that I might not
know everything about what's going on (I mean, who could seriously claim
that?)...unless, of course, they "clear it up" and I can be sure. I think
that's always best. What good does it do to get upset, only to find out
later that the person had a good reason or was making a joke or whatever? I
assume that the majority of people here are intelligent people (Who fans). I
have to assume at least that, even if it's not true in every case.
One thing to ALWAYS keep in mind: without the benefit of really knowing the
person who writes or does something unsavory, we cannot be sure what their
motivation is...so don't assume the worst. Maybe they had a damned good
reason. I always assume the best, and then find out if I really feel I need to.
But I ain't a-gonna use those "emoticons." People will just have to
misunderstand, I suppose.
