Tommy and Phenomenon

I saw Phenomenon yesterday.  Without going into the quality of the film
itself I thought I would briefly point out its similarities to the story
of Tommy.  Both Travolta's character, George, and Tommy don't understand
why this supernatural experience is occuring...they both have these
mysterious powers of sensation.  The townspeople, first scared then
demanding, overstimulate George/Tommy to the point of total
confusion..."we want you...we love you...help us...what is in the
future?".  Both characters finally come up with their conclusion on the
meaning of life...as individuals and as a society.

Although the stories differ, there seem to be many parallels which make me
think that JT may have "used" some of PT's ideas whether intentionally or
not.  Anyone else think so?
