Excuse me while I reminisce...
Miami, August 8, 1976 was my first Who concert. It poured down rain right
before the first of two opening acts (Law) was to play. Law never saw the
stage. After the downpour, the sun came out and so did the second act
(Montrose). Montrose had a great drummer who put on quite a show, though
they were otherwise pretty ordinary.
Shortly after Montrose left, Moon did a summersault on to the stage, and
before I knew it The Who launched into the show. The show was high energy
all the way, except for a drawn out Magic Bus full of guitar doodling.
There were only a couple of moments where they were actually scary onstage,
but those moments were priceless.
They played a mini-Tommy (about 5 or 6 songs) complete with lasers during
the finale.
Pete was toally disconnected from the audience, and didn't say a word the
entire show. It didn't slow down his on-stage passion, though. Roger
introduced all the songs.
We went home happy and muddy (it never did wash off). Creem magazine wrote
up the concert (it was probably a reprint from somewhere else), citing it
as proof that The Who was still the greatest live band around. They got no
argument from me.
