I'd never heard them called anything other some variation of the Hebraic 
nickname until the PC era. East coasters will, of course, remember NY 
radio personality Jean Shepard's great use of the Jew's Harp and reverb. 
Crank up an amp, turn reverb up to ten and you can wail on one of those 
suckers - no matter what you call it.

BTW - I assume Jew and Jaw are corruptions of each other, with the real 
name lost in antiquity, much like hard-on is now the universal term for 
what was once called a hard one.
