Re: First Who

One ALWAYS remembers the first time.

My first Who experience was in the Fall of 1967. The
Student Council of Union Catholic High School in Scotch
Plains, NJ decided that rock concerts would be a great
way to raise money. The Who were the first of many:
Lovin' Spoonful, Cream, Vanilla Fudge, Iron Butterfly,
Black Sabbath. Back in those days, arena concerts were
unheard of and the clubs like the Fillmore East were just
beginning. In fact, the Student Council released the expense
sheet to the students showing that the Who were paid $3000
for the performance. Tickets were $2.50!!

It was a school night and the Who fans were arriving all during
the afternoon and hanging out across the street - the first
time that (at the tender age 14) that I saw "hippies" outside
of the East Village in New York.

The concert was GREAT! The new Leeds CD puts me back on
nostalgia lane - big time. I Can See For Miles, Pictures of
Lilly, Happy Jack, etc. Before My Generation, the lights went
dim at stage left and Pete was handed a cheap guitar for the
smashing. Roger sang "talkin 'bout my g-g-g" and smashed his
mike into the stage. Pete started smashing his "substitute"
guitar to bits. A smoke generator was exploded in one of the
amps. Keith released the anchors on his "Keith Moon - Patent
British Exploding Drummer" custom drum kit causing them to
crash together - then started hurling the cymbols like
frisbees. John, the Ox stood there and watched the whole
affair with some kind of detached amusement - while holding
on to his V-shaped bass guitar like his life depended on it.

OH - WHAT A NIGHT TO REMEMBER!!
