Re: Is you is or is you ain't a Who fan

>That's exactly how I feel. I don't understand Mark's "integrity" argument
and I hope he explains why Pete and Roger continuing to use the name The Who shows a lack of it.

Jim M:

OK, we agree that The Who were the most singular Rock band in history, and that they set a standard none have ever come up to, right? Well, certainly when one creates such a thing is it not integrity to leave that perfect thing alone, and not use it to cash in? Does it not demean that perfect thing when you use it for a lessor purpose?

Townshend has been extremely vocal about Art and high standards. Now...was it all just posturing?

>forgotten Mark even had felt that way, and his name never entered my mind when I was writing this post.

Jo:

Gee, thanks.

>He's also said (confusingly) that he would go see a show next year, but
only if the band doesn't call themselves The Who.

Scott:

Why are YOU confused?

>How does that make everything different. If they call themselves Daltrey
& Townshend will the shows *sound* better?

It means they're not pretending to be something they're not. You wouldn't expect The Who if they call themselves the DTs or something. If Ringo and Paul went out as The Beatles, would you feel comfortable with that? Most people I asked said those two alone were NOT The Beatles. Well, there you are. That's exactly how I feel about The Who.

>correctly? The Who should *follow* Page & Plant's example?

Don't be ridiculous. Nice try, but one doomed to failure.

>Daltrey & Townshend? Sure. Why not?

You do realize that doesn't make any sense. The three musicians in the original band were equally important to the sound. Pete and John took up the slack Zak left because he's not Keith (no one is), but NOW you're taking away half (at the least) of that too.

Nah. It's not The Who.

>The Who. Those two are the core members (whatever that means). The brains
& the voice. At least that's the way I see it.

Actually, Entwistle and Townshend are the only ones who could be called the "core members."

>Your questions & concerns were/are valid & I thought Mark responded to
you in a polite, reasoned manner.

Didn't I? I thought I did. I'm not angry.

>For many (particularly I suspect in the US), "the line" comes sometime later
- - maybe around "Quadrophenia", maybe after the 76 tour, maybe after Moon's
sad and tragic death.

Simon:

To be fair, in the US we barely got to hear The Who until Tommy. A song here and there, that's all.

>So, when JAE died - it was awful, it was sad and all that - but for me, the
line had already been crossed.

Me too, but I did feel Pete and John plus Zak had made up for the lack of Keith. Not quite as good, but very close.

>Where do you guys in the U.S. get the idea that if and
when the Moon pic gets done, that it will be American
actors??

Derrick:

Ha! Point well made!

> May? *MAY*???!!!

Kevin:

Yeah, "may" even in October.

>Short Term Memory loss. She was actually a National Champion in "Beach Flags".(proud husband)

"Beach Flags," huh? No, you never told me nor have I ever heard of Beach Flags. Must be a Maryland thing. Thang?

>That's the draw.

And we've already drawn the line, as Steven Tyler might say. Seriously, you'll love it. You'll learn a lot about Pete, I certainly did. But if something that's going to call itself The Who tours in 2004, then it's not worth even trying to get it together. Most will go to the tour with their vacation.

>Yeah, but we have to admit they were/are more popular than our boys.

So was Michael Jackson. Your point? I don't feel WE are "the masses." Aren't we a bit more discriminating in our taste than that? Are we now expected to compromise because if we don't we're not "loyal Who fans" and we're "punishing the surviving members?" Sheesh!
