I'm still trying to figure out the "pondscum" thing.  Is that the algae that
clings to rocks and makes the bottom of the pond slippery?  Is it the gunk
that floats on top of the water?  Is it something else?

In this part of the world a pond can be salt or fresh water.  It can be
quite large.  They are often formed by glaciers and fed by brooks and
springs.  Some have public beaches.  They rarely have anything that could be
classified as "pondscum".

Now, I did spend a great deal of time on dairy farms as a child in Maryland
and these farms all had manmade ponds that were located in the cow pasture.
The dairy ponds had scum that could contain all kinds of nasty runoff from
the pasture.  Is that the type of pond that you are familiar with?
