You're not inferring that John had a plot (no pun intended here) in mind,
are you?

If we give this theory more rope (again no pun intended), then it could
be suggested that the likely targets of this plot include:

1. Pete
2. Roger
3. Pete & Roger
4. Who Management
5. John's wife
6. Some book-maker that John owed money to
7. The Hard Rock

To think that a plot for revenge was John's motivation for
living the way he did, would suggest that he was willing to pay the 
price to enact this kind of revenge.   Further, if John truly knew of
his fragile condition, he probably recognized that price may be small
if he did not expect to live much longer anyway.

After reading Pete's commentary on Kurt Cobain, I am somewhat shocked
that there was no intervention on John if they knew of his condition.
Perhaps there were attempts and because of Pete's flawed history,
John was having nothing to do with Pete's attempts at helping.

In the end - "Can you really help the ones you love"?
