You forgot to mention Hendrix, too.  :)

This country has a lot of inertia.  Plus, it suffers from the same 
difficulty the Brit awards pointed out.  The record companies seem to 
dictate what's listened to, and therefore what exposure new bands get.  It's 
only after an independent band has made it in spite of the high $$ 
competition that anyone really takes notice.
