This follows from a somewhat archaic notion that to be heroic, warfare
must be hands-on.  Hands-on warfare is a direct risk to the soldier,
and therefore a test of his courage and manhood.  This philosophy is
still practiced by gentlemen who prefer fisticuffs to guns, but it's
slipping fast in favor of drive-by shootings.
