guitar harmonics

Harmonics, for loud guitars, are the overtones created
by certain intervals of notes played together. These
overtones blend in the vibrating air and "suggest"
other notes to the ear which harmonize with the notes
being played. Usually these overtones are higher
register notes, like a fifth or an octave up.
Guitarists who spend enough time playing at sufficient
volumes discover all sorts of harmonics that can be
reproduced all over the neck, and many players develop
their own personalized techniques for getting these
harmonics as they play.
Lots of players, Townshend included, have at various
times made the use of harmonics an important component
of their sound. "Live At Leeds" is practically ground
zero for harmonics-as-art guitar playing. The huge
volume that the band played with in those days
probably created harmonics on top of harmonics!
