Amazing. I was just reading last night that David Bowie nee Jones used
to open for The High Numbers at the Marquee and wanted to know more
about it. Thanks. Although I like your theory, it was the fame of
David Jones of The Monkees that caused him to become Bowie.

You are absolutely correct..I must have done some really sloppy wording
(that's what happens to writers who forget to die before they get old such as
I), because although I did not intent to suggest that Pete's catching Bowie
red-handed ripping off his style did anything more than embarash the hell out
of David Jones..er..Bowie...

The name change was for precisely the reasons you cited..

I didn't know about his opening at the famous "Marquee" gigs....That's a gem
of information and I thank you for it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course, 99% of what the early David Bowie was/became/etc., was really the
work of his wife Angela, who as a chick in a sexist era, had to find a pretty
face and "pull the strings" but it was her creativity to a very large
degree..And as soon as he was big enough, David dumped her, and then had his
lawyers really "dump" all over her, including some ridiculous "gag order"
that lasted something like ten bloody years! Justice may have been blind, but
it apparently was deaf as well!

BTW, do you know if there survives ANY bootleg (or otherwise) recording or
film clip (of more than the 3 second type as featured in THE KIDS ARE
ALLRIGHT) from those wonderful Marquee/Mod gigs? That had to have been Kit
Lambert's finest hour (it was his idea to rent the place out one night a week
for a year and then hustle all the SHEPARD'S BUSH Mods to hustle all the more
upscale West End MODS (such as Bowie) to pack the place..But of course, with
any other band it would have been a fizzle..With THE WHO it was oneof the few
clearly discerenable steps to the ledgendary status they, above all others,
so thoroughly both earned and deserve!

Thanks again,
