Wrinkly Rockers

The April 28th issue of the distinguished British newspaper, The Sunday
Times, in its Style magazine insert, has an item entitled "Wrinkly Rockers"
under which there appears a current photo of Roger Daltrey. The piece is an
amused look at the announcement that the Who ("aged 152"), Dylan ("aged 54")
and "young Eric Clapton, 51" will play at Hyde Park on June 29th. Here's an
extract which will give the flavour:

"Wrinkle, wrinkle, little star: the rock lifestyle is almost always the
same. The sudden rise to fame, the big single, the much-praised album, the
hotel wrecking, the drinking, the broken marriages. Then the acting career,
the business opportunities. The Where Are They Now? articles followed by
the unexpected comeback. The 20 Golden Greats on CD. The Lifetime
Achievement award. The charity concert. The row with Oasis."

The question that occurs to me is, how come the return of semi-retired
ballet or classical piano stars is greeted with hosannas and garlands
whereas when aging rockers return to the scene the reaction (even amongst
many rock fans) is unrestrained hilarity or, as in England, the gently
satirical gibe?!......Gary M.
