Make that "was." KYYS (aka KY102) was "the" KC rock station in the 70's.
They did almost everything right, from simulcasting concerts to playing
albums without commercial interruptions. Now it's just the typical mix of
mediocre old with mediocre new. Though it is the only place you can
request--and actually get--an album cut of the Who. And the only local
station to play "English Boy" when it was released. (Not for long, but
better than nothing.)

An "official" classic rock station appeared in the 80's (101.2), but turned
into a 70's station (the best of Aerosmith, Elton John, & Rush). The current
popular rock station is KQRC 98.9. A mix of metal and grunge, with some Led
Zep to appease the old farts. The college "alternative" station (105.9) out
of Lawrence Kansas (U of KS town) plays the whiney stuff. Thank goodness for
tapes and CDs.
